During this process, I looked for someone who — like Justice Breyer — has a pragmatic understanding that the law must work for the people.

Someone who has the historical perspective to understand that the Constitution is a resilient charter of liberty.

Someone with the wisdom to appreciate that the Constitution protects certain inalienable rights — rights that fall within the most fundamental personal freedoms that our society recognizes.

Someone of extraordinary character, who will bring to the Supreme Court an independent mind and uncompromising integrity — with a strong moral compass and the courage to stand up for what is right.

（最高裁判所判事として黒人女性ケタンジ・ブラウン・ジャクソン氏を指名したことに関して）今回の指名プロセスの中で、私は、退官するブレイヤー判事のように、法律は人々のために機能しなければならないということを本質的に理解している人を探しました。憲法が弾力性のある自由であることを理解する歴史的視点を持っている人物であること。私たちの社会が認める最も基本的な個人の自由という権利が不可侵の権利として憲法によって守られなければならないということを評価している人物であること。そして、最高裁判所に独立した精神と妥協を許さない誠実さをもたらし、強い道徳的な指針と正しいことに立ち向かう勇気を持っている、並外れた性格を持っている人物であることです。
