Back in 1987 as a first-term legislator, I worked with newly elected Gov. John Waihee to establish one of the first public Hawaiian immersion programs at Waiau Elementary in Pearl City.
People were saying to save the culture, we also had to save the language from the brink of extinction with only 100 native speakers. Now ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i is spoken by thousands of people around the world and is an official language of Hawai’i.
